Peter Stano, spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, said on Wednesday the European Union (EU) has “a principled position of rejecting extrajudicial killings and supporting the rule of law, including within the framework of international criminal justice”. Commenting on the assassination of the head of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, in the Iranian capital Tehran, Stano asserted, in statements to IRNA news agency, that “no country will benefit from a new escalation in the Middle East”. He called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any further escalation.
