NEW YORK: The Union Association for Human Rights (UAHR) participated in the United Nations Summit of the Future held at the UN headquarters in New York.
The UAHR’s delegation was headed by Mariam Al Ahmadi, Vice President of the UAHR, as part of efforts to strengthen the involvement of Emirati and Arab civil society concerned with human rights in shaping the contours of the future, thereby maximising the impact of civil society in building the present and determining the horizons and outlines of tomorrow.
Additionally, the UAHR hosted representatives from several participating organisations during a working dinner on the sidelines of the summit, where they discussed the UAHR’s vision regarding the Pact for the Future, as well as the unprecedented developments that have occurred in the civil society landscape in the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the support and promotion of human rights by the wise leadership.
The UAHR participated in Summit of the Future following its engagement in the 2024 UN Civil S
ociety Conference, which took place in Nairobi, Kenya, in early May. This was part of the preparations for the formulation and adoption of the Pact for the Future and associated documents. The UAHR presented insights and proposals that were included in the civil society’s observations regarding the Pact for the Future, outlining the vision of Emirati and Arab civil society on global future-related issues.
On 22nd September, 2024, world leaders adopted a Pact for the Future that includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. This Pact is the culmination of an inclusive, years-long process to adapt international cooperation to the realities of today and the challenges of tomorrow. The most wide-ranging international agreement in many years, covering entirely new areas as well as issues on which agreement has not been possible in decades, the Pact aims above all to ensure that international institutions can deliver in the face of a world that has changed dramatically since they were
created.
