Abu Dhabi: The 11th edition of the annual Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate (ADSD) launched today in Abu Dhabi under the theme ‘The Illusion of Stability: A World in Flux’. Organised by the Emirates Policy Center (EPC), the two-day event addresses evolving global strategic trends alongside influential shifts in world security, emerging alliances, rising militarisation, and the changing roles of great powers, particularly focusing on the ongoing instability in the Middle East.
According to Emirates News Agency, the conference commenced with a panel dedicated to the UAE, outlining the nation’s future roadmap for sustainability, economic diversification, technological advancement, and innovation. Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the UAE President, in his keynote speech, stressed the necessity of integrating humanitarian perspectives into strategic decision-making processes. He emphasised the importance of placing the lives and dignity of people, especially vulnerable groups, at the forefront of political consi
derations.
Dr. Gargash reiterated the UAE’s vision under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to advocate for political solutions, dialogue, and de-escalation in the Middle East. He highlighted severe humanitarian crises in Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan, emphasizing the UAE’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid and promoting peace and stability in these regions. Dr. Gargash called for a collective Arab response to regional crises and reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to the Palestinian cause, advocating for a two-state solution.
Moreover, Dr. Gargash outlined critical priorities for Lebanon, including distributing humanitarian aid, electing a president, and supporting state institutions like the Lebanese army to enforce national sovereignty. For Sudan, he underscored the need for a ceasefire, a political process towards a civilian-led government, and humanitarian support while safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
On broader Middle Eastern issues, Dr. Gargas
h stressed the importance of collective action and a comprehensive approach to achieving regional stability. He underscored the UAE’s commitment to humanitarian support, political solutions, and de-escalation efforts, calling for cooperation to foster a more stable future and warning against further polarisation and conflict. Dr. Gargash also highlighted the crucial role of the United States in current crises, suggesting a strategic shift to integrate humanitarian concerns with strategic interests.
With a new American administration in office, Dr. Gargash noted the importance of a comprehensive approach to guarantee regional security and stability. He remarked that President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has congratulated President-Elect Donald Trump, reaffirming the UAE’s commitment to a strategic partnership with the U.S. He also stated that the UAE aims to become a global hub for innovation, leveraging advancements in AI, technology, and sustainable energy, and highlighted its strategic
partnership with the U.S. in technology, space, and climate action.
Dr. Gargash concluded his speech by advocating for a multifaceted approach balancing political realities with humanitarian considerations, promoting good governance, economic development, and opportunities for youth. He emphasised that politics should aim to improve the lives of ordinary people, focusing on collaboration and sustainable development for a stable and prosperous future.
Dr. Ebtesam Al-Ketbi, President of the Emirates Policy Center, noted that the 11th Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate is taking place amidst significant global and regional transformations, citing Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. elections and evolving American foreign policy amid intense global competition. She highlighted discussions on key geopolitical issues, including great power rivalries, the role of key players in Asia, and the emergence of “middle powers” alongside the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Al-Ketbi pointed out that the forum also addresses critical topics
such as transport routes, logistics corridors, and maritime security in the Red Sea, particularly in light of international competition over rare minerals and Houthi threats to maritime navigation. Furthermore, the forum examines the impact of conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon on regional stability and the future of the Palestinian state. The discussions underscore the UAE’s role as a hub of opportunities and growth amidst global crises, particularly in artificial intelligence and knowledge transfer.
She concluded by noting the distinguished group of speakers and experts from around the world participating in the forum, including representatives from the Arab world, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
