Amna Al Dahak Highlights UAE’s Role in Global Food Sustainability

Abu dhabi: Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to sustainable food security and its role as a global partner in enhancing food systems for improved efficiency and sustainability.

According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Al Dahak made this statement in observation of World Food Day, which is celebrated annually on October 16th. She highlighted the challenges faced by global agrifood systems, stressing the importance of cooperation and joint action to achieve a better food future. The minister underscored that extreme weather, climate change, and economic shocks are exerting unprecedented pressure on food systems, with fragile supply chains contributing to global hunger affecting approximately 673 million people.

Dr. Al Dahak noted that food systems account for about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with food loss and waste being significant issues that require urgent attention. She pointed out that 13.2 percent of food is lost post-harvest and before retail, while 19 percent is wasted in households, food services, and retail globally. Reducing this loss and waste would enhance land use, water management, and positively impact climate and livelihoods.

She further mentioned the UAE’s commitment to addressing the needs of a growing global population through cross-border, cross-sector, and cross-generational teamwork. Domestically, the UAE is focused on enhancing local agriculture in line with its National Food Security Strategy 2051 by investing in agritech, sustainable farming practices, and innovative water management. These efforts aim to transform the agricultural landscape, promote local food production, empower farmers, and strengthen domestic food supply chains. Initiatives like ne’ma are also tackling food waste, emphasizing that everyone’s support and participation are crucial for success.

Concluding her remarks, Dr. Al Dahak reiterated the UAE’s dedication to transforming food systems to ensure nutritious food for all and cultivate a sustainable and equitable future in collaboration with the global community.
