Arab League, UNRWA Discuss Conditions of Palestinian Refugees

The Arab League discussed on Tuesday with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) the conditions of the Palestinian refugees and the financial challenges facing UNRWA.

This came during a meeting between Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Commissioner General of UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini at the headquarters of the General-Secretariat of Arab League in Cairo.

Aboul Gheit affirmed his full support to the mission undertaken by UNRWA towards the Palestinian refugees in its five areas of operation, especially with the beginning of the academic year, as well as the importance of providing education opportunity to all Palestinian refugee children, according to a statement issued by Arab League.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining donors’ commitment and ensuring that they never backtrack on their contribution to UNRWA’s budget, considering the persistent funding gap in the budget as pointed out by the Commissioner General of UNRWA which is about $170 million.

The Commissioner General of UNRWA is poised to deliver short remarks before the ministerial meeting of the Arab League council due to be held on Wednesday at the headquarters of Arab League in Cairo.
