Bangkok:Thai authorities declared Bangkok a disaster-affected area on Saturday following persistent heavy rain that resulted in widespread flooding throughout the capital.

According to Emirates News Agency , the declaration allows local authorities to implement emergency measures. These measures include accelerating drainage operations, setting up temporary shelters, identifying bedridden patients and other vulnerable groups, and assessing damage to provide assistance and compensation.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt highlighted the risks the situation posed to people's lives and the damage it caused to both public and private property. He emphasized the need for swift assistance to residents and close coordination among relevant agencies.

The city experienced nearly 300 millimetres of rain since Thursday, leading to extensive waterlogging and flooding on roads, which disrupted traffic and travel in several areas of the capital.
