Canada’s Northwest Territories Declare Wildfire Emergency

The government of Canada’s Northwest Territories declared a state of emergency Tuesday due to wildfires that have largely destroyed one remote community and pose a risk to territorial capital Yellowknife.

“This declaration allows the government to acquire and deploy the necessary resources to support the management of this unprecedented wildfire season and protect the health and safety of Northwest Territories residents,” the territorial government said in a statement.

The Canadian government said Tuesday it approved federal assistance to combat the wildfires and deployed the military to assist with firefighting efforts in the area.

“We are working closely with the government of the Northwest Territories to ensure communities have the support they need,” Canadian federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan said in a statement.
