China Launches AI Models for Fengyun Satellites to Improve Extreme Weather Forecasting

Changsha:China has introduced its first batch of artificial intelligence (AI) models designed for Fengyun meteorological satellites to enhance extreme weather monitoring capabilities. These models were unveiled at a users conference in Changsha, central China's Hunan Province.

According to Wam, the newly released AI models include an intelligent typhoon cloud imagery interpretation model and a severe convection nowcasting warning model. These innovations are expected to significantly improve the Fengyun satellites' ability to monitor and issue warnings for extreme weather conditions, such as typhoons and severe convection.

The intelligent typhoon cloud imagery interpretation model is capable of automatically analyzing various aspects of typhoons, including their position, structure, intensity, and evolution. It generates standardized interpretation text and outputs visualized products, which serve as technical support for effective typhoon monitoring and forecasting.

AI technology is rapidly advancing, allowing for the swift extraction of key information from vast amounts of satellite data and the prediction of weather patterns. This development represents a crucial step in applying AI to meteorological challenges.

Currently, China operates 10 Fengyun meteorological satellites, with data access extended to 141 countries and regions.
