Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Advances Treatment of Complex Plasma Cell Disorders

Abu Dhabi:Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has underscored the significance of personalized treatment approaches for complex plasma cell disorders by successfully managing two distinct cases. The hospital treated a patient with high-risk multiple myeloma and another diagnosed with POEMS syndrome, a rare plasma cell disorder, highlighting the need for precise diagnosis and individualized treatment plans.

According to Emirates News Agency, the first patient, a 53-year-old woman, endured high-risk multiple myeloma that progressed despite various advanced therapies. Her treatment included an autologous stem cell transplant and multiple drug therapies, yet her condition continued to advance. After a comprehensive review, the medical team identified untried established medicines, leading to an improvement in her condition as shown by reduced myeloma masses and improved clinical results.

The second patient, a 42-year-old man, presented with symptoms initially mistaken for a neurological condition, later diagnosed as POEMS syndrome. This rare disorder affects multiple body systems and is characterized by a range of symptoms including polyneuropathy and organomegaly. Dr. Ajlan Al Zaki from the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi emphasized the necessity of understanding each patient's unique disease biology and clinical picture to devise effective treatment strategies.

Dr. Al Zaki compared multiple myeloma treatment planning to a game of chess, where strategic decisions must be made for immediate and future treatment outcomes. He also noted that diagnosing rare conditions like POEMS syndrome involves recognizing seemingly unrelated symptoms and considering rare diagnoses, with early diagnosis being crucial for effective treatment.
