Death toll in India touches 51 due to heavy rain

At least 36 people were killed in different parts of north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh due to rain related incidents, as the total number of deaths in the last 36 hours rose to 51, local media reports said.

The Indo Asian News Agency said quoting the relief commissioner’s office in Uttar Pradesh that lightning killed 17 people, 12 died to drowning while seven others were killed due to incidents caused by heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours.

The torrential rain has resulted in inundating huge areas under water, rise in river water levels and hitting train and traffic movement. Indian capital New Delhi was also pounded by torrential rain. Delhi Chief Minister called a meeting today to discuss the situation due to rain after he announced closure of school for Monday. Indian authorities yesterday announced that 15 people were killed in different parts of north Indian states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. Several flood like situations, landslides and lightning incidents, inundation of vast areas, destruction of road and public infrastructure and collapse of houses were reported from different parts of India as the monsoon season arrived in the country.
