Egyptian Exchange Sees Significant Growth in Investor Numbers and Trading Activity

Abu Dhabi:The Egyptian Exchange (EGX) has reported a substantial increase in investor activity, with over 500,000 new investors joining in the first nine months of 2026. This surge has contributed to a rise in the average daily equity trading value, reaching approximately EGP10 billion, up from around EGP3.5 billion in the previous year.

According to Emirates News Agency, Omar Radwan, Executive Chairman of the EGX, highlighted this growth at the AFCM Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi. He noted that the number of new investors this year has already surpassed the 300,000 recorded throughout 2025. If the current growth trend continues, the combined new investor count for 2025 and 2026 could exceed one million.

Radwan stated that some trading sessions saw equity transactions between EGP19 billion and EGP20 billion, excluding bond trading. The EGX aims to continue its expansion by leveraging technological transformation, which has been a key factor in increasing investor numbers. Egypt's Law No. 5 of 2022 has facilitated this by allowing brokerage firms to utilize fintech, thereby easing access for new investors.

He compared the current growth to 2020, when only about 25,000 new investors joined the market, and mentioned that more brokerage firms are expected to adopt fintech, supporting further growth. The EGX is also broadening its offerings, introducing derivatives and futures contracts.

Recent tax incentives, including the removal of capital gains tax on listed securities, have bolstered trading activity by about 50 percent in the two months following their announcement. Radwan attributed the strong performance to improved Egyptian economic indicators, such as increased remittances, foreign reserves, and a better net foreign asset position.

Radwan also noted a significant drop in inflation and economic growth exceeding 5 percent, contributing to a favorable investment climate. He observed that nearly half a million investors are active daily, with institutional investors making up 15 to 20 percent of daily trading.
