Etihad Airways and Africa World Airlines Forge Strategic Partnership

Abu dhabi: Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Africa World Airlines, an Accra-based carrier, have entered into a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement aims to enhance their cooperation in codeshare and interline operations, cargo collaboration, and frequent flyer programs.

According to Emirates News Agency, the agreement was signed in Accra and outlines a framework for connecting the networks of the two airlines. Once the partnership is in effect, Etihad passengers will be able to travel seamlessly beyond Accra on Africa World Airlines' network across Ghana and West Africa, while Africa World Airlines' customers will have expanded access to Abu Dhabi and Etihad's network of 118 destinations.

Beyond passenger services, the partnership also includes collaboration on cargo operations. This will link Ghanaian and West African exporters with Etihad Cargo's global capacity. Additionally, the loyalty programs of both airlines will be integrated, offering members more opportunities to earn and redeem points.

The partnership comes at a time when Ghana and the UAE are deepening their trade, investment, and governmental ties, with an increase in travel between Accra and the UAE. A direct commercial link between these aviation hubs is seen as a natural progression.

The Memorandum of Understanding will take effect from 24 July 2026, with phased implementation of the different areas of cooperation. This partnership sets the stage for Etihad's planned Abu Dhabi-Accra service, which is expected to commence on 24 March 2027. Combined travel offerings will become available once interline cooperation is in place.

Arik De, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer of Etihad Airways, emphasized Ghana's significance as a dynamic aviation market in West Africa, noting that Africa World Airlines is an ideal partner. He highlighted the framework's comprehensive scope, covering passenger services, cargo, and loyalty, and expressed a commitment to growing with Ghana.

Sohail Mahmood, Chief Operating Officer of Africa World Airlines, expressed pride in the airline's decade-long service connecting Ghana and West Africa. He stated that the partnership with Etihad Airways will provide their customers with direct access to Abu Dhabi's extensive network while fostering opportunities for Ghanaian travelers and international businesses.
