In 2021, the value of trade (imports plus exports) of agricultural goods between the EU and the rest of the world hit €347.0 billion, €20.7 billion more than in 2020.
The EU exported €196.9 billion worth of agricultural products and imported €150.0 billion, generating a surplus of €46.9 billion, data by Eurostat showed.
Between 2002 and 2021, EU trade in agricultural products more than doubled, equivalent to average annual growth of almost 4.8 percent. In this period, exports (5.4 percent) grew faster than imports (4.2 percent).
In terms of main trade partners, when it comes to exports, the United Kingdom was the main partner with a 21 percent share of extra-EU exports of agricultural goods (equivalent to €42.1 billion), followed by the United States (12 percent; €24.4 billion), China (8 percent; €16.5 billion), Switzerland (5 percent; €10.1 billion), Japan (4 percent; €7.3 billion) and Russia (4 percent; €7.1 billion; mainly vegetable products and foodstuffs).
Extra-EU imports originated mostly from Brazil (9 percent; €13.4 billion), the United Kingdom (9 percent; €13.0 billion), the United States (6 percent; €9.3 billion), Norway (5 percent; €7.3 billion), China (5 percent; €6.9 billion) and Ukraine (5 percent; €6.9 billion; mainly vegetables and oils and fats).
