London: The UK and France have announced their intention to declare that the nuclear deterrents of both nations, although independently managed, can be coordinated to jointly respond to any ‘extreme threat to Europe,’ officials from both countries confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Emirates News Agency, the declaration, which is set to be signed on Thursday, emphasizes that the deterrents of both countries will remain under national control. However, they can be coordinated, and there is no extreme threat to Europe that would not elicit a response from both nations. This was outlined in a statement by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the French presidency.
French President Emmanuel Macron will sign the agreement on Thursday as part of the conclusion of his three-day state visit to the UK. The visit will culminate in a bilateral summit, where the allies aim to ‘reboot’ their defense ties with particular attention on joint missile development and nuclear cooperation.
