Future Health Whitepaper Proposes Framework for Wearable Technology Integration in Healthcare

Abu Dhabi:Future Health, a global initiative by Abu Dhabi, has released a whitepaper titled "Embedding Wearables into the Future of Health and Wellbeing," which explores the potential of wearable technologies in supporting preventive, personalized, and continuous healthcare models.

According to Wam, the whitepaper, developed in collaboration with Knowledge Contributor Deloitte, outlines a five-pillar framework for advancing wearable-enabled healthcare. These pillars cover technology and interoperability, data governance and privacy, regulatory and policy enablement, consumer and clinical adoption, and ecosystem partnerships and innovation. The framework addresses the technical, regulatory, clinical, and organizational considerations necessary for integrating wearable technologies safely and at scale into Abu Dhabi's health ecosystem.

The publication arrives as connected health technologies become increasingly sophisticated and widely adopted. Despite the global wearable technology market being valued at USD 92.9 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 229.9 billion by 2033, the whitepaper identifies ongoing challenges such as data quality and clinical validation, fragmented technology ecosystems, and issues with privacy, data governance, and clinical integration.

Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, emphasized the role of wearable technologies in providing continuous health insights, which can aid in early risk identification. She highlighted that the untapped value of these technologies lies in connecting insights with health systems to facilitate earlier interventions and promote longer-lasting health.

Abu Dhabi already possesses several foundational elements to advance this agenda. Initiatives like Sahatna, which combines wearable data with longitudinal health records from Malaffi to generate personalized Health Age scores, demonstrate the integration of continuous health data with Abu Dhabi's focus on prevention, longevity, and personalized care.

Rohan Sawhney, Partner at Deloitte Middle East, noted the importance of translating wearable-generated data into personalized interventions and improved health outcomes, emphasizing Abu Dhabi's infrastructure and strategic ambition to lead this transformation. The whitepaper outlines a three-phase roadmap—Build, Accelerate, and Transform—for integrating wearable data into precision prevention, clinical decision-making, and population health management.

High-value applications identified in the framework include diabetes and obesity management, maternal health, elderly fall-risk prevention, and wellness promotion. The whitepaper suggests that as adoption grows, the potential of wearable technologies will be realized by ensuring safe, consistent, and meaningful use of data across health systems. This aligns with Future Health's 2026 theme, "To Sense is to Predict," which focuses on using continuous health insights to support predictive and preventive care approaches.
