Abu Dhabi:Yas Clinic, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), has made significant progress in the treatment of thalassemia using advanced gene therapy. Fahad, a 43-year-old patient, has become independent of regular blood transfusions after years of reliance on them to manage his condition.
According to Emirates News Agency, Fahad had been living with transfusion-dependent thalassemia, requiring blood transfusions every three to four weeks. This long-term treatment led to complications such as iron overload and a continuous need for iron chelation therapy, affecting his overall health and quality of life.
Approximately eighteen months ago, Fahad was referred to Yas Clinic and ADSCC, as both institutions were introducing advanced gene therapy treatments in the UAE. Gene therapy is a major advancement in treating inherited blood disorders, offering a potential long-term solution for patients lacking a suitable bone marrow donor.
After thorough medical evaluations and testing, Fahad was deemed suitable for gene therapy. This occurred alongside national efforts supported by the Department of Health and UAE leadership to make advanced therapies more accessible. The treatment involved collecting, genetically modifying, and reinfusing Fahad's stem cells, addressing the disease's root cause.
Since undergoing gene therapy last year, Fahad has remained under close observation by a multidisciplinary medical team. He is now transfusion independent, enjoying improved health and fewer hospital visits.
Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at Yas Clinic, highlighted the transformative nature of gene therapy for inherited blood disorders and the UAE's commitment to providing advanced treatments. This success marks a milestone in expanding access to innovative treatment options.
Dr. Mohammed Abu Haleeqa, Hematologist at Yas Clinic, noted the life-changing impact for patients who achieve independence from regular transfusions. Gene therapy offers a solution by using the patient's own genetically modified cells, especially for those without suitable donors.
This achievement underscores Yas Clinic and ADSCC's dedication to advancing gene therapy services in the UAE, providing access to the latest treatment innovations for inherited blood disorders.
