German FM: Government may collapse

BERLIN, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has warned that the coalition government might collapse due to results of the recent European parliamentary elections.

Dissolution of the government, which groups the Social Democratic Party, Alliance 90/The Greens and the Free Democratic Party, is currently the greatest award to the “enemies of democracy” in and outside Germany, the minister said in a statement, alluding to the radical right-wing and populist parties.

It is the duty of democratic governments to resolve issues collectively under hard circumstances, she said. However, she expressed confidence in Chancellor Olaf Scholz, his deputy the Minister of Economy Robert Habeck, who belongs to her party the Greens, aDd the Liberal Minister of Finance Christian Lindler.

Her statement came amid calls by opposition parties for HOLDING snap elections due to the “frustrating” results of the European parliamentary elections, held on June 9. Right-wing, ultra right-wing and populist parties had bagged the li
on’s share of the polls’ ballots.

The Social Democrats who chair the government had garnered 14 percent of the votes in the elections, the Greens 11.9 percent, the Liberals 5.2 percent while the Christian Democrats won 30 percent of the ballots.
