Health Minister Heads Kingdom’s Delegation to WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Committee Meetings

Minister of Health Fahad Al-Jalajel headed the Kingdom’s delegation to the meetings of the 71st session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, entitled “Health Beyond Borders: Action, Access, Equity,” convening in Qatar on October 16 and 17.

The meetings are attended by health ministers and the representatives of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean countries, in addition to partner organizations and invited delegates from non-member states.

The first session of the meetings opened with an introduction to the priorities of the region and its three main initiatives: expanding equitable access to medical products, investing in a sustainable and resilient health workforce, and accelerating public health action on substance abuse. These initiatives constitute a pivotal factor in accelerating the WHO’s strategic implementation plan for the Eastern Mediterranean Region 2025-2028.

Several issues concerning public health will be reviewed during the two-day session, such a
s health emergencies and the eradication of polio. Working papers are expected to address multiple health topics, including antimicrobial resistance, health information systems, responding to challenges during humanitarian crises, and supporting mental health and psychosocial aspects during emergencies.
