Hurricane Isaias Weakens After Florida Landfall

Destin:Florida Hurricane Isaias weakened to a Category 1 storm after making landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 hurricane. The storm rapidly lost wind speed but continued to pose a threat of storm surges and snapped power lines as it moved through the Deep South.

According to Emirates News Agency, the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) reported that the hurricane crossed the western Florida Panhandle and was located about 105 km west-northwest of Panama City, Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) on Friday. The NHC issued warnings of potential storm surges, urban and river flooding, and flash floods across the region, particularly in southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle into southwest Georgia.

Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, is expected to continue weakening but may still produce gusty winds well inland through Saturday, even after becoming post-tropical. Alabama's emergency management agency reported downed trees and power lines, creating hazardous travel conditions in Houston County, which is under a flash flood warning.

The storm is projected to move across Alabama and enter the Tennessee Valley over the weekend. Power outages affected more than 412,000 people in Florida and nearly 243,000 in Alabama as the storm made landfall, according to data from power outage tracking firm PowerOutage.us.
