Iraq Plans to Construct 36 Water Retention Dams in 2024 Following Worsening Drought

Iraq plans to construct 36 water retention dams in 2024 as part of the country’s plans to battle drought and water scarcity, Water Resources Minister Aoun Diab said on Monday.

Diab told a press conference that scientific indicators and satellite images forecast an early downpour in autumn and early winter following a four-year drought that hit the country.

The water reserves from the dams will be utilized for drinking and agriculture instead of those consumed during the drought period, he said.
