Jizan, Jazan region is one of the prominent agricultural areas in the Kingdom, boasting fertile lands, an ideal climate, and abundant water resources, which enables year-round cultivation of a diverse range of crops, with figs emerging as a standout star, according to the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA).
Farmers in Jazan have capitalized on the region’s natural advantages to produce high-quality figs on commercial scale. With over 498,000 fig trees yielding around 2,000 tons annually, according to MEWA, the crop has become a cornerstone of the local economy.
Aligned with Saudi Vision 2030, fig cultivation is a key component of Jazan’s agricultural growth strategy. Beyond their economic value, figs are proving to be a sustainable and resilient crop, thriving in the region’s environment.
The Jazan Agricultural Research Center (JARCKSA) has been instrumental in enhancing fig quality and competitiveness through decades of research. The region’s fig harvest, spanning from December to May,
coincides with a global production lull, providing a lucrative export opportunity.
As Jazan continues to innovate in agriculture, figs are poised to play an even more significant role in the region’s economic landscape and its reputation as a premier producer of high-quality agricultural produce.
The endeavors of the Jazan Agricultural Research Center since 1982 have bolstered this sector through research in tropical fruit cultivation. The center aims to enhance the quality of figs cultivated in the region, to make this crop highly competitive in both local and international markets.
