Jordanian observatory detects 683 earthquakes worldwide in 2023

In the period from January to July of 2023, the Jordanian Seismological Observatory at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported 683 earthquakes worldwide. In a statement released on Monday, the observatory’s president Ghassan Sweidan noted that 173 earthquakes were local, 301 were regional, and 210 happened on international areas, including Indonesia and New Zealand. He added that the strength of the tremors recorded inside the Kingdom ranged from 1.3 to 4.5 on the Richter scale. The cutting-edge observatory has 23 seismic monitoring stations spread out across the Kingdom to collect data on earthquakes, including slow earthquakes, to be used by engineers and specialized researchers to understand and interpret the mechanism of the earth’s movement and prepare earthquake-resistant building codes.
