Abu dhabi: The Lebanese Parliament on Wednesday approved a general amnesty law, marking the first of its kind since 1991. Authorities have not yet announced the number of people who will benefit from the law.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Lebanese Parliament issued a statement confirming the approval of a proposed law that grants a general amnesty and reduces the duration of certain sentences. This legislative move is seen as a significant development in the country's legal landscape.

Parliamentary sources revealed that the new law entails a reduction in sentences for individuals convicted and sentenced to death or life imprisonment. These sentences will now be reduced to 17 prison years, which is effectively 12 years and nine months. This adjustment in sentencing is expected to have a considerable impact on those currently serving lengthy sentences.
