Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s leading clean energy company, and its partners have achieved a significant milestone with the signing of the Investment Agreement for their 1GW windfarm project in Kazakhstan. This agreement was formalized on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, witnessed by key officials including Nurlan Baibazarov, Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.
According to Emirates News Agency, the signing ceremony included Almassadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, and Abdulla Zayed, Masdar’s Director of Business and Project Development. Located in the Jambyl region, this windfarm represents Masdar’s first venture in Kazakhstan. It will feature a 600-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), positioning it among the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States region.
The 1GW wind project is co-developed by W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund, wit
h Masdar leading. Construction is scheduled to start by Q1 2026, aiming to power approximately 300,000 homes in southern Kazakhstan and reduce CO2 emissions by 2 million tonnes annually.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized the project’s significance, highlighting its alignment with the UAE’s goal to triple global renewable energy by 2030. Almassadam Satkaliyev expressed Kazakhstan’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, underscoring the importance of the collaboration with the UAE and Masdar.
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, reiterated the partnership’s role in expanding renewable energy capacity, marking the wind farm as a crucial step toward Kazakhstan’s net-zero ambitions.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed optimism about the project’s potential impact, noting Masdar’s expertise in large-scale renewable projects. The wind farm aligns with Kazakhstan’s climate goals,
aiming to increase renewable energy capacity to 15% by 2030 and 50% by 2050, en route to carbon neutrality by 2060.
Since its founding in 2006, Masdar has been pivotal in advancing the UAE’s sustainability vision, with projects in over 40 countries and a goal to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW by 2030.
