Mercy Corps voiced its commitment to reinforcing Jordan’s substantial efforts to address climate change and mitigate its economic and humanitarian impacts.
The organization emphasized its dedication to supporting Jordan in tackling the challenges posed by water scarcity, unpredictable weather patterns, heatwaves, flash floods, and evolving climate and environmental conditions and hazards. These challenges demand innovative and strategic solutions grounded in expertise and comprehensive planning.
Darius Radcliffe, Mercy Corps Jordan’s Country Director, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) in an interview that Mercy Corps is actively providing sustainable solutions and fresh perspectives aimed at reducing the impacts of climate change. These solutions are closely aligned with Jordan’s vision and strategic priorities to build capacities for climate adaptation, including strengthening the resilience of communities and various systems. The organization reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the Jordania
n government and local institutions to implement projects that support climate adaptation, contributing to driving Jordan toward a more sustainable future.
Radcliffe underlined Jordan’s significant role in localizing climate change efforts, particularly those focused on adaptation and mitigation. Mercy Corps is dedicated to supporting Jordan’s pivotal role in this area through its programs and projects.
He explained that the organization’s interventions rely on strategic changes in community behavior through innovative programs that raise awareness of the risks of climate change and promote environmentally friendly practices. This includes working with the Government to develop regulatory policies that enhance climate-smart practices, conducting accurate assessments to identify opportunities and risks, and collaborating with the private sector to find comprehensive and sustainable solutions.
“Mercy Corps is taking concrete steps to turn its vision into reality by introducing climate-smart practices across
all its programs.” Radcliffe explained. “The organization is currently implementing the “Building Communities’ Flood Resilience” project in partnership with local entities, which aims to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities against the impacts of floods and heat waves, in addition to empowering communities to withstand future climate challenges.”
Additionally, the organization is promoting stronger networking and coordination through the “Tahammul” pilot which maps climate resilience initiatives across various stakeholders to facilitate data-driven connections among those working in the environmental sector. The Tahammul platform has strong potential to foster collaboration, optimize resource allocation, and ensure greater transparency in climate action efforts across the Kingdom.
Mercy Corps is also exploring ways to enhance the quality and affordability of energy services for refugees to promote resilience, sustainable development, and improved socio-economic outcomes. Intervention of this nat
ure would provide an enabling environment for sustainable energy services to refugees in camps and host communities.
In conclusion, Radcliffe reiterated Mercy Corps’ commitment to fostering an environment resilient to climate impacts and ensuring a stable and sustainable future for generations to come. “Green growth is not just a slogan for us but a genuine commitment. At Mercy Corps, we are dedicated to discovering innovative and sustainable ways to reduce carbon emissions and promote a green economy in Jordan. We believe these solutions will deliver long-term positive impacts, enhancing both environmental health and the quality of life for individuals.”
