Dubai: The Ministry of Economy and Tourism has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai Science Park, part of TECOM Group PJSC, to enhance cooperation in intellectual property (IP) protection and patent registration. The agreement was formalized by Dr. Abdulrahman Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector at the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, and Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, Senior Vice President of Dubai Science Park, Dubai Knowledge Park, and Dubai International Academic City, part of TECOM Group.
According to Emirates News Agency, the collaboration will provide legal and technical support to companies operating in Dubai Science Park and other TECOM Group districts, promoting innovation and contributing to the UAE's knowledge economy. The partnership aligns with the Ministry's ongoing efforts to foster collaboration between public and private sectors and supports national goals related to innovation and creativity, reinforcing the UAE's status as a leader in IP rights protection.
Dr. Al Muaini emphasized the Ministry's commitment to advancing the national innovation ecosystem and enhancing the UAE's IP protection capabilities. He highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships with business districts that support entrepreneurs and innovators, strengthened by a collaborative network of key stakeholders from both public and private sectors. The primary objective is to protect the rights of creators and inventors while providing a framework that supports a rapidly growing, knowledge-driven economy.
The MoU with TECOM Group will facilitate legal and technical support for businesses within TECOM Group's districts and accelerate patent application review and commercialization locally and internationally. This initiative aims to enhance the economic value of national innovations. Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi noted that IP protections are crucial for fostering innovation and that the UAE's commitment to nurturing human ingenuity is attracting global talent. The partnership with the Ministry will accelerate research and development, fostering homegrown innovation with global impact.
The collaboration supports the UAE's goal of transforming innovations into economically viable products, strengthening a knowledge-based business environment. Between January and July 2025, the Ministry recorded 1,221 patents, compared to 466 in the same period the previous year, and received 2,430 new patent applications, showing a rise in awareness of IP protection as a key economic driver.
Dubai Science Park provides a cohesive ecosystem for over 500 customers, including AstraZeneca, BeiGene, and Pfizer, and 6,500 professionals from life, energy, and environmental science sectors. The district offers sector-specific facilities, including Grade-A offices and LEED-certified laboratories. Dubai Science Park is part of TECOM Group's portfolio, which includes several other business districts across various sectors.
