Geneva: The Muslim Council of Elders is participating in the inaugural edition of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, organised by the United Nations on 6th-7th July, in Geneva, Switzerland. The event gathers government leaders, UN officials, representatives from the private sector, academia, and civil society organisations to enhance international cooperation and explore global frameworks for AI governance.
According to Emirates News Agency, Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, General Advisor to the Muslim Council of Elders, highlighted the critical juncture humanity faces, necessitating a global framework for AI governance rooted in justice, responsibility, transparency, and the protection of human dignity. This framework should ensure that human beings remain central to scientific and technological progress, while allowing AI to contribute to development, peace, and prosperity.
Judge Abdelsalam further stated that under the leadership of His Eminence Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Muslim Council of Elders, in cooperation with Al-Azhar and international stakeholders, is committed to reinforcing the ethical dimension of AI. Efforts include the development of a Global Charter for the Ethics of AI, promoting peace, justice, and human flourishing by grounding technology in a shared ethical framework.
The Muslim Council of Elders' participation aligns with its mission to promote shared human and ethical values and support international efforts to ensure AI technologies serve humanity, protect dignity, and foster peace and sustainable development. The Global Dialogue on AI Governance, established by a United Nations General Assembly resolution, serves as an international platform to foster cooperation, share expertise, and promote inclusive dialogue on AI governance's future.
The initiative aims to ensure AI benefits are shared globally and that governance frameworks reflect priorities of all nations, not just those technologically advanced. The Global Dialogue coincides with the World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2026 and the AI for Good Global Summit, reinforcing efforts to build a more equitable, inclusive, and human-centered digital future.
