National Commission for UNESCO: blocking national media channels and websites is coup against international standards

The National Committee for Education, Culture and Science “UNESCO” condemned the closure of a number of national media channels and websites by YouTube and Facebook.

In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the National Committee considered the closure of these channels a clear coup against international standards supporting freedom of expression and the independence of the media.

The statement described those illegal measures and unjustified bias as a major setback in guaranteeing basic freedoms, such as protecting the basic right to freedom of expression online and offline, which is in line with international standards, and in accordance with United Nations charters and Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“These measures represent a kind of intimidation and intimidation crime committed against people and society to prevent them from exercising freedom of expression, silencing mouths and concealing facts, which has a broader impact on freedom of the press and the right of expression,” the statement said.

It called on UNESCO, as the specialized United Nations agency charged with facilitating the free exchange of ideas through word and images, to play its important role in defending freedom of expression online, outside, and to call on the two companies to restart Yemeni national media channels and websites without restrictions.
