Niger Ambassador in Washington warns coup could destabilise region

Niger’s ambassador to Washington, Mamadou Kiari Liman-Tinguiri, warned Thursday evening that if Niger collapses, “the entire Sahel region will collapse and destabilise, and there will be no way to protect the coastal countries of Africa and the countries of the West Coast.” Tinguiri added that the coup military council must “come to its senses,” otherwise it risks pushing the country towards collapse, leading to the entire Sahel region being dragged into a state of instability. He expressed concerns that the Russian Wagner Group would take advantage of the situation, according to the Washington Post. On Thursday evening, the leafets of the military coup in Niger announced on national television the “termination” of the missions of Lyman-Tingere and their country’s ambassadors to France, Nigeria and Togo as well. Nigeria’s President Mohammad Bazoum announced in an article published by the Washington Post Thursday night that if the coup attempt succeeds in removing him from power, “it will have dire consequences for our country, our region and the entire world.” Bazoum called on “the US government and the entire international community to help him restore the country’s constitutional order, which was done on a democratic electoral basis.”
