The Permanent Committee for Human Rights held its 17th meeting, headed by Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to His Highness the UAE President and Chairman of the Committee, in the presence of Committee members from relevant UAE entities.
During the meeting held at the headquarters of the Presidential Court, Dr. Gargash was briefed on the work achieved by the taskforce formed by the Committee, including the submission of periodic reports for the UAE, as part of the state’s obligations as signatories to the Arab Charter on Human Rights, in addition to several international agreements.
He was also briefed on the technical cooperation between the UAE and UN bodies and mechanisms in the field of human rights.
In this context, Dr. Gargash stressed the UAE’s commitment to enhancing its partnership with United Nations human rights bodies, mechanisms, and UN committees on human rights, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the special procedures of the Human Rights Co
uncil, as well as treaty bodies.
Dr. Gargash affirmed the importance of continuously organising activities, events, and workshops, supervised by the Permanent Committee, which contribute to spreading awareness, building capacity and providing training in the area of human rights.
Notably, the Permanent Committee for Human Rights was established according to a Cabinet resolution issued in October 2019, and acts as a liaison between all UAE entities concerned with human rights.
The Committee is focused on developing policies, programmes, and plans to raise awareness and build capacity in the human rights field. Furthermore, it strengthens collaborations with regional organisations and UN human rights bodies and committees, and oversees the submission of periodic reports for the UAE within the framework of relevant regional and international human rights organisations, including the national report for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
