Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial Launches Second Edition in Al Ain

Al Ain:The second edition of the Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, commenced in Al Ain. This year's event, themed "Home A Glossary for a Communal Sense of Place," introduces four newly commissioned works at Al Qattara Oasis, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, and Al Towayya Roundabout. The artworks will be displayed until February 15, 2027, with the Biennial expanding across Abu Dhabi on November 15, 2026.

According to Wam, the artistic direction of the Biennial is led by Elvira Dyangani Ose, Artistic Director of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. The second edition explores 'home' as a dynamic and collective concept, encouraging engagement through distributed commissions, research, and public interactions. The initiative aims to foster a shared understanding of Abu Dhabi through diverse cultural expressions.

Moroccan artist M'barek Bouhchichi presents a stainless-steel piece reimagining the pigeon tower, featuring traditional Emirati sea shanties in Braille. Indian artist Reena Saini Kallat's work uses acoustic locators to replay the calls of extinct bird species in the UAE. Spanish artist Asunción Molinos Gordo focuses on the Al Aflaj irrigation systems, integrating historical artefacts into her installation. At Al Towayya Roundabout, Emirati artist Roudhah Al Mazrouei's Tassa transforms a traditional gold headpiece into an expansive sculpture.

Elvira Dyangani Ose emphasizes the Biennial as a platform for rethinking the concept of 'home,' suggesting it is a condition experienced and expressed through culture and language. The event builds on the inaugural edition, Public Matter (2024-25), and continues to contribute to Abu Dhabi's public art landscape.

The Biennial remains open in Al Ain until February 15, 2027, and in Abu Dhabi from November 15, 2026, to February 15, 2027.
