Rock-Solid Heritage: Preserving Ancient Houses in Maysan

The rugged terrain of Thaqif, Bani Saad, and Bani Malik villages in Maysan Governorate, south of Taif, has profoundly influenced the construction of houses there. These ancient dwellings, carved from solid rock, reflect the unique culture and engineering prowess of their inhabitants.

The houses are divided into various rooms, including sleeping quarters, guest areas, and livestock shelters. Their distinctive architecture features stone and marble walls, juniper wood windows, and intricate carvings. The multi-story design, with multiple entrances, showcases the ingenuity of the builders.

These dwellings are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, blending seamlessly with the surrounding mountain landscape. The use of local materials and construction techniques demonstrate the resourcefulness of the villagers.

Beyond their practical purposes, these houses also serve as social hubs. The central mosque and communal gathering spaces foster a strong sense of community. The basement, a feature in
many houses, provides storage for food and shelter for livestock during harsh weather.

The villagers’ deep connection to their land is evident in their cultivation of aromatic plants, which add a touch of fragrance to their daily lives. These plants are used for both culinary and medicinal purposes, reflecting the villagers’ holistic approach to living.
