Saudi Arabia, US keen on resuming talks with both Sudanese delegations

Saudi Arabia confirmed Sunday that it and the US are keen on resuming talks with the Sudanese negotiating delegations, after they were suspended due to violations of the ceasefire agreement.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that this came in the Saudi-US talks on the situation in Sudan, indicating that "those discussions are focused on facilitating humanitarian assistance and reaching agreement on near-term steps the parties must take before the Jeddah talks resume." The statement underlined the obligation of the two parties to protect civilians in Sudan "under the May 11 Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan," calling upon both parties to agree on a new ceasefire and implement it effectively "with the aim of building to a permanent cessation of hostilities." The two Sudanese delegations are still in Jeddah despite the suspension of official talks with them and the expiration of the five-day ceasefire agreement yesterday, Saturday.
