SDRPY Supports Yemeni Transport Sector with Comprehensive Projects for Sustainable Development

The Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen (SDRPY) has supported the transport sector with 38 projects and initiatives benefiting more than 14 million people. These initiatives have contributed to enhancing the efficiency and capacity of ports, supporting safe travel, improving the efficiency of vital roads, and enhancing the performance of border crossings. This support aims at overcoming various challenges and providing solutions and initiatives to develop the sector in accordance with its strategic plans and directions to support eight essential and vital sectors: health, education, agriculture and fisheries, energy, water, development programs, capacity building for the Yemeni government, and transport.

The program’s initiatives in the transport sector have improved the quality of life for Yemenis and enhanced social connectivity through various projects and initiatives. These have supported safe travel and air transport and facilitated land, sea, and air movement and access to an
d from Yemen.

The transport projects and initiatives align with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, specifically contributing to the third, ninth, and eleventh goals by developing infrastructure and supporting economic, social, and humanitarian movements.

SDRPY has supported five Yemeni airports, including the rehabilitation of Aden International Airport. It currently serves about 345,000 passengers annually and has expanded its total capacity to one million passengers per year, thus improving the quality of services provided to Yemenis and enhancing flight operations.

These projects and initiatives also included the rehabilitation of Al-Ghaydah International Airport in Al-Mahra Governorate and supporting Socotra and Seiyun airports by providing necessary safety plans inside the airports. These efforts have contributed to training and qualifying staff on navigation and air traffic control devices, facilitating the addition of new domestic and international destinations.

Positive reflections of the p
rogram’s transport projects and initiatives include expanding and rehabilitating the Al-Abr road, which serves more than 11 million beneficiaries annually. This road connects Saudi Arabia and Yemen, serves as a strategic international link among Yemeni governorates, and is used for commercial shipments and traveller crossing.

Another notable transport project is the rehabilitation of the Haijat Al-Abed road. This vital street links Taiz with other governorates and significantly impacts the lives of five million Yemenis. It also plays an essential role in enhancing safe travel and improving traffic safety. The program has also rehabilitated several internal roads in Yemeni governorates to improve mobility efficiency and traffic safety.

In line with its goals to provide various forms of support to the transport sector, the program’s projects and initiatives have enhanced port efficiency and capacity through four development projects and improved the performance of three border crossings.

Improving the tra
nsport sector’s efficiency in Yemen has supported development projects by receiving and transporting heavy shipments and construction materials from supply sources to execution sites. This has contributed to boosting the operation of many logistics companies, especially in the transport, storage, and shipping fields.

The comprehensive nature of the program’s transport projects and initiatives serves various sector fields, including ports, border crossings, airports, and roads. These efforts have improved mobility, infrastructure, logistics opportunities, and safe transport for individuals and goods, enhancing access to services and markets.

The transport sector projects and initiatives are part of 229 projects and initiatives offered by the program across eight essential and vital sectors and have improved infrastructure, enhanced human resource capabilities, boosted the role of the private sector, developed service levels, and contributed to improving living standards, creating job opportunities, and emp
