Security Council Extends UN Peacekeeping Mission in Lebanon for Final Term

Beirut: The UN peacekeeping mission, tasked with monitoring the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon, has been extended for a final term by the Security Council. The mission will continue until December 31 of next year, following unanimous support from the council.

According to Emirates News Agency, the resolution mandates an 'orderly and safe drawdown and withdrawal' of UN personnel after the mission concludes next year. This process will be conducted in close collaboration with the Lebanese Government, as stated in a UN press release on Thursday.

Established in 1978, the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been crucial in overseeing the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon and maintaining security in the region. During the drawdown period post-2024, UNIFIL will retain its mandate to provide security and support to UN personnel and maintain situational awareness around its outposts and bases.
