Abu Dhabi:SEHA Tawam Hospital has successfully performed advanced laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery on an 81-year-old patient. The patient, who had distal rectal cancer, also faced multiple medical risk factors including obesity, cardiac disease, and a history of having a pacemaker.
According to Emirates News Agency, the surgery was particularly challenging due to the deep location of the tumour within the pelvis. However, the minimally invasive procedure allowed the tumour to be removed through small incisions, avoiding the need for a temporary or permanent stoma.
The patient recovered well post-surgery, was able to tolerate a normal diet, and was discharged after three days. This outcome underscores the importance of meticulous procedure selection and comprehensive care coordination for elderly patients with complex cancer conditions.
Dr. Mahdi Al Taher, Consultant Gastrointestinal and Oncologic Surgeon at SEHA's Tawam Hospital, emphasized the technical demands of treating distal rectal cancer, especially in patients with multiple risk factors. He noted that the minimally invasive approach was crucial in safely removing the tumour while supporting the patient's recovery and quality of life.
The success of this case highlights SEHA's commitment to specialised cancer care, leveraging advanced surgical techniques and coordinated perioperative care. SEHA’s efforts continue to strengthen access to specialised cancer treatment in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, supporting patients with advanced care closer to home.
