Sultan Al Qasimi Invests $2 Million in R and D of ‘Magdi Yacoub Valve’

Sharjah: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has directed the allocation of $2 million to support the research and development efforts of the ‘Magdi Yacoub Valve’ project.

According to Emirates News Agency, this generous contribution reflects His Highness’s belief in investing in science and research as essential for progress, and showcases his commitment to making Sharjah a global hub for knowledge and innovation.

The ‘Magdi Yacoub Valve’ is a significant medical breakthrough, providing hope to millions of patients worldwide. The funding will be channeled through the Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SPARK), which is a leading incubator for innovations. Led by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, a renowned cardiac surgeon known for performing the UK’s first heart-lung transplant, the project is at the forefront of medical science. The novel heart valves are made from a biocompatible fiber scaffold that integrates with the patient’s cel
ls and dissolves over time, leaving a living valve made from the patient’s tissue, thus reducing surgeries and rejection risks.

The decision reinforces His Highness’s belief in scientific discovery as a future driver and highlights his dedication to research that advances human development. It also underscores his support for pioneering scientific endeavors that provide research-based solutions to improve lives.

Commenting on the initiative, H.H. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SPARK, emphasized the Ruler of Sharjah’s vision of using innovation to benefit humanity. She noted SPARK’s role in transforming ideas into real-world solutions that improve lives, particularly through significant projects like that led by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub.

This support underscores Sharjah’s role in fostering creative minds and pioneering scientific projects that benefit humanity. It enhances SPARK’s position as a bridge between academic research and practical applications.
