Torrential Rains Cause Fatal Floods in Eastern Syria

Rome:Seven people, including five children, have been killed and seven others injured due to torrential rains leading to flash floods in eastern Syria.

According to Wam, the flooding has impacted the eastern provinces of Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, and Hasakah, as well as parts of Aleppo. The floods have caused significant damage to infrastructure, cut off roads, and forced families to evacuate their homes.

Four people remain missing as rescue teams continue their search in flooded areas, as stated by Emergency and Disaster Management Minister Raed al-Saleh. The five children reportedly drowned in pools of water formed by the floods, while another individual died in a traffic accident. Since the onset of the storms, Syria's civil defence teams have conducted over 550 emergency operations, rescuing 60 people and responding to more than 900 distress calls.

Emergency crews have evacuated over 350 students from two schools and assisted 375 families in leaving camps in Raqqa province. Teams have also addressed flooding in camps in rural Aleppo and Idlib and have pumped water from approximately 250 homes and public buildings. Most regions in Syria have been experiencing unstable weather with heavy rain and strong thunderstorms since Tuesday.
