UAE Renews Commitment to Open, Rules-Based International Trade at Inaugural FIT Partnership Meeting

Abu dhabi: The United Arab Emirates has reaffirmed its commitment to spearheading international efforts for an open, rules-based international trade system. This initiative is seen as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth and inclusive development on a global scale. Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, represented the UAE at the first ministerial meeting of the Future Trade and Investment Partnership (FTIP) in Singapore.

According to Emirates News Agency, the inaugural Ministerial Meeting of the FIT Partnership convened with ministers and representatives from member and observer countries, including a virtual participation from World Trade Organisation Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Launched on 16th September 2025, the FIT Partnership aims to promote open and fair trade, support inclusive growth, and tackle modern trade challenges through practical initiatives.

During the meeting, new members Paraguay and Malaysia were welcomed into the FIT Partnership, joining 14 existing countries, bringing the total membership to 16. Observers included representatives from Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Thailand, and Peru, who attended to gain insight into the Partnership’s initiatives.

The ministers endorsed several initiatives, starting with a Ministerial Declaration on Supply Chain Resilience to mitigate supply-chain risks. Additionally, a workstream on advancing digital and paperless trade was launched, focusing on international standards and digital documentation exchange. Further efforts included strengthening the rules-based trading system and leveraging technology to address trade challenges, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The FIT Partnership aims to extend its influence by inviting more countries committed to its principles, ensuring a tangible impact in promoting open and fair trade. During the meeting, bilateral discussions were held between Dr. Al-Zeyoudi and various international trade leaders, highlighting the UAE’s active role in fostering global trade relationships.
