Abu dhabi: The UAE is preparing to host the World Maritime Day Parallel Event 2025, organised by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure in collaboration with the International Maritime Organisation. Scheduled from 30th September to 1st October, the event will follow the theme ‘Our Ocean – Our Obligation – Our Opportunity.’
According to Emirates News Agency, the event will gather ministers, dignitaries, officials, and experts from across the globe to discuss strategic issues in the maritime transport industry and explore sustainable advancements. The goal is to enhance expertise exchange and unify international efforts to protect the marine environment while increasing global trade efficiency.
Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, remarked that hosting this event marks a significant milestone in solidifying the UAE’s position as a global hub for maritime transport and a destination for innovation and technological advancement. The UAE is committed to collaborating with international partners to adopt sustainable solutions that balance economic growth with marine environmental protection.
The UAE’s role as a leading maritime hub is attributed to enhanced safety standards and environmental protection regulations. It plays a key role in transitioning towards clean energy alternatives and serves as a platform for decision-makers to develop solutions aligned with the International Maritime Organisation’s decarbonisation goals.
Al Mazrouei highlighted that the maritime sector is a pivotal part of the UAE’s economic ecosystem. The country’s advanced ports and logistics services are central to its developmental vision. Since joining the International Maritime Organisation, the UAE has adopted international practices to strengthen its position as a secure maritime environment for investment.
The UAE’s strategic location at global trade crossroads has made it a vital link in supply chains. With integrated ports, free zones, and advanced logistical and digital infrastructure, the UAE reinforces its role as a commercial and cultural bridge connecting East and West, supporting global trade efficiently and reliably.
Environmental sustainability is a key priority in the UAE’s maritime policies. Initiatives like the Green Recycling Yards project focus on eco-friendly recycling of ships. The UAE has developed green infrastructure for low-sulphur fuel and natural gas supplies, supporting biofuels and green methanol use.
The UAE’s maritime system includes the National Maritime Navigation Centre, which manages vessel traffic monitoring. The National Single Window for Maritime Services enhances operational efficiency for ship and port operators. Advanced digital solutions for maritime data exchange align with international standards.
To strengthen its maritime sector, the UAE has established academies like the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy and the Sharjah Maritime Academy, resulting in the graduation of 497 Emirati officers and engineers, including 100 women, now holding leadership roles across various maritime sectors.
