UNHCR Faces Funding Shortfall Amid Growing Refugee Crisis

Geneva:The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) is facing a significant funding shortfall, having received only $3 billion of the $8.5 billion needed for the year. This financial gap comes as 117 million people have been displaced globally, prompting UNHCR's chief, Barham Salih, to warn about the potential collapse of the support system for asylum-seekers.

According to Emirates News Agency, in his first keynote address to UNHCR's Executive Committee meeting in Geneva, Salih emphasized the challenges faced by the agency and the dire situation for the world's most vulnerable populations, who are not receiving the necessary assistance.

Salih pointed out the difficulties of operating under current constraints, noting the agency's 'exceptionally difficult year,' which has been compounded by the departure of 8,000 staff since 2024. He highlighted the rapid pace at which conflicts are causing displacement, with UNHCR responding to 22 emergencies across 18 countries so far in 2026.

Despite the escalating humanitarian needs, the agency has secured less than a third of its required funding for this year. Salih expressed concerns about the frustration among countries that have long hosted refugees, as well as the heightened fears among refugees over their safety due to significant cuts in aid.

He stressed that while efficiency is crucial, it cannot make up for the lack of resources. When funding falls below a critical level, the impact is felt directly by those who rely on UNHCR's support.
