World Tourism Day 2025: UN Emphasizes Tourism’s Role in Building a Sustainable Future

Melaka: World Tourism Organisation (UN Tourism) Member States, affiliate members, invited delegations, and representatives of the tourism industry will convene for the World Tourism Day (WTD) and the 7th World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025, scheduled from 27th to 29th September 2025, in Melaka, Malaysia. This event marks a significant gathering to discuss tourism's transformative potential as an agent of positive change.

According to Emirates News Agency, the World Tourism Day 2025, observed on 27th September under the theme 'Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,' emphasizes the need for more than mere growth to realize tourism's full potential. It requires good governance, strategic planning, robust monitoring, and clear priority setting aligned with long-term sustainability goals. Tourism is viewed not just as an economic sector but as a catalyst for social progress, delivering education, employment, and creating new opportunities for all. To harness these benefits, a deliberate and inclusive approach is essential, focusing on sustainability, resilience, and social equity in tourism development and decision-making.

The Madrid-based UN organisation stresses that sustainable tourism transformation must begin with effective governance and people-centric planning. Investment in education and skills, particularly for youth, women, and communities at risk of exclusion, is crucial. Despite tourism's growth potential, many young people in emerging destinations lack adequate training to participate effectively. The UN Tourism highlights the importance of accessible, high-quality educational programs and vocational training tailored to the evolving needs of the tourism sector to empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to collective progress.

Furthermore, sustainable investments are identified as a powerful lever for transformation. Between 2019 and 2024, the sector attracted over 2,300 greenfield FDI projects, representing USD 126 billion in investment. However, investments should prioritize long-term community benefits, resilience building, and climate action. Public and private stakeholders must collaborate to align growth with climate goals, social impact, and innovation, guided by the UN Tourism Principles of Sustainable Tourism Investment.

This World Tourism Day issues a clear and urgent call to action: commit to making tourism a platform for systemic and sustainable transformation, guided by effective governance, strategic planning, rigorous monitoring, and clear collective priorities. Tourism holds the potential not only to foster peace but also to empower, regenerate, and sustainably transform the world.

Strategic innovation and responsible entrepreneurship are essential components of this transformation. Digitalization and innovative business models present immense opportunities. Supporting MSMEs and startups, especially those led by women and youth, can significantly contribute to inclusive prosperity and sustainable economic diversification.
