Dubai: Dubai Municipality has signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various government entities, private sector organisations, and academic institutions to bolster cooperation in scientific research, expand the application of advanced technologies and AI-driven solutions, and enhance the resilience of food supply chains. This initiative aims to adopt innovative practices that support a safe and sustainable food ecosystem, further establishing Dubai as a global hub for shaping the future of food safety.
According to Emirates News Agency, these MoUs were signed during the nineteenth edition of the Dubai International Food Safety Conference, the region’s largest platform for food safety experts and specialists worldwide. Organised by Dubai Municipality, the conference accommodates over 3,500 participants and 225 speakers and experts from 70 countries.
In a strategic move, Dubai Municipality entered into an agreement with the Jebel Ali Free Zone to streamline food safety compliance for major food companies. The MoU aims to enhance the flexibility of food supply chains, unify procedures to boost operational efficiency, improve regulatory performance across the free zone, and speed up food clearance processes for the local market, thereby supporting proactive public health protection.
Another MoU was signed with Ecolab UAE General Trading to collaborate on initiatives related to water system safety, food safety, and consumer product safety. This partnership emphasizes innovation, AI adoption, and modern technologies to elevate safety standards across the sector.
Furthering its academic and research collaborations, Dubai Municipality signed MoUs with Canadian University Dubai and Manipal University Dubai. These agreements aim to enhance cooperation in research, technical consultations, and the development of solutions focused on municipal priorities such as environmental health, safety, and food safety. The partnerships include knowledge exchange in food inspection and control systems, leveraging AI and data analytics to improve operational performance and detect food-related risks. They also support youth development through training programmes, community engagement initiatives, and innovation partnerships.
Additionally, Dubai Municipality inked a MoU with the Rochester Institute of Technology – Dubai to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, focusing on student training, scientific research, and capacity building. This agreement supports the emirate’s ambitions for food safety, public health, and community engagement by promoting research and innovation in food safety, integrating AI and machine learning in food inspection and risk assessment, and encouraging the publication of scientific research.
Dr. Naseem Al Rafaei, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Environment, Health and Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, stated that these partnerships and agreements are part of a broader effort to reinforce Dubai’s position as a global centre for food safety innovation. The aim is to advance Dubai’s food ecosystem, making it more sustainable, competitive, and trusted both locally and internationally. Through the use of advanced technologies and AI-driven systems, Dubai Municipality continues to strengthen proactive capabilities, anticipate challenges, and develop effective solutions, providing integrated platforms and services that support the food sector while ensuring the highest standards of health, safety, and food security for residents and visitors alike.
