Abu dhabi: In an initiative that redefines environmental monitoring, Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched a pilot project employing artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to identify illegal waste dumping sites in the emirate. This project aims to enhance the efficiency of waste management and improve the effectiveness of environmental monitoring.
According to Emirates News Agency, this project is the first in the UAE to use AI models and satellite image analysis in waste management, marking a strategic shift from traditional methods to an advanced system capable of data analysis and predicting potential violations. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, highlighted the agency's commitment to a smart and sustainable environment, aligning with the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. The project supports the pillar of A Green Innovation, Science and Technology, part of the Abu Dhabi Environmental Centennial 2071.
If expanded, this initiative will significantly improve proactive monitoring of environmental violations through intelligent satellite image analysis and smart models that predict illegal dumping sites. This approach allows for early intervention, preventing environmental degradation.
The project also aims to enhance the waste management system's efficiency, strengthen governance among government agencies, and increase public satisfaction by reducing illegal dumping and improving environmental aesthetics. Engineer Faisal Al Hammadi, Executive Director of the Environmental Quality Sector at EAD, noted the project's implementation in Al Bukariyah in the Al Ain Region. The results showed over 90% accuracy in detecting illegal dumping sites, identifying 150 waste sites compared to 43 discovered through field monitoring alone.
Moreover, the project enabled high-accuracy waste classification and analysis of site changes over the years, boosting EAD's ability to track waste origins and develop effective strategies to mitigate environmental violations. Following site identification, EAD coordinated with relevant authorities for waste removal and area restoration, ensuring prompt remediation and continued monitoring to prevent recurrence.
Through the use of smart digital tools based on satellite image and geographic data analysis, EAD aims to bolster its legislative and regulatory role in environmental oversight, contributing to environmental protection, natural resource sustainability, and human health risk reduction in the emirate. The project's success was showcased at the International Solid Waste Association World Conference (ISWA 2025) in Argentina, earning praise from global experts and participants.
Following the pilot phase's success, EAD plans to expand the project to cover the entire Emirate, establishing a central platform for smart environmental monitoring using AI technologies and satellite image data analysis, further supporting Abu Dhabi's sustainability goals and smart environmental governance.
