ARCO Marks International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The General Secretariat of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) is joining international organizations in commemorating the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed on October 13.

This global event aims to raise awareness about the importance of mitigating the impacts of disasters, particularly those caused by climate change.

Climate-related disasters, such as floods, storms and droughts, have devastating consequences, including famine, displacement and the destruction of crops.

According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre, these disasters force millions of people to flee their homes each year, with vulnerable populations being disproportionately affected.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction underscores the need for proactive measures to address the growing threat of climate change. These include developing effective disaster response plans, enhancing institutional and human capacities, and monitoring climate patterns closely, to anticipate and m
itigate potential disasters.
