Austria sees significant drop in asylum applications

Official figures have revealed a sharp decline in the number of asylum applications in Austria since the beginning of 2024.

Statistics show that the number of asylum applications dropped by 57 percent to fewer than 19,000 from the start of the year until September, compared to the same period last year.

According to a statement by the Asylum and Migration Authority, it received 18,816 asylum applications in the first three quarters of this year, marking a decrease of 25,000 applications, or 57 percent, compared to the first nine months of 2023.

The authority noted that the drop in asylum applications in Austria is much more significant compared to other European countries, where figures declined by only 8 percent.

Austria saw a particularly steep drop in asylum applications in recent months, especially in September, which witnessed a 78 percent decline, marking the highest decrease this year.
