EtihadWE Joins Consortiums for Major Omani Power Projects

Muscat: Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE) has announced its participation in consortiums responsible for developing the Misfah and Duqm power generation projects in Oman. This development follows the signing of consortium agreements by Nama Power and Water Procurement, with leadership from Nebras Power for the Misfah project and Korea Western Power (KOWEPO) for the Duqm project. The total investment for these projects is estimated at approximately OMR 1 billion.

According to Emirates News Agency, the Misfah project consortium, which includes EtihadWE and Bahwan Infrastructure Services, aims to develop the Misfah Power Plant with a total capacity of about 1,700 MW. Meanwhile, the Duqm project consortium, comprising Nebras Power, EtihadWE, and Bahwan Infrastructure Services, is set to develop the Duqm Power Plant, which will have a capacity of around 877 MW.

Both projects will utilize advanced combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Once operational, they are expected to stabilize Oman’s national electricity grid, support economic and industrial growth, and integrate with future carbon capture systems, aligning with Oman’s transition towards a low-emissions energy system.

Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE’s Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and Chairman of EtihadWE, emphasized the importance of this partnership, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to sustainable energy cooperation in the region. He noted the projects’ role in fostering energy security and reliability while supporting the transition to lower-emission energy systems.

Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals, Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, affirmed that the projects are crucial in strengthening the national energy system and aligning with Oman Vision 2040 and the net-zero emissions goal by 2050. He highlighted the deployment of high-efficiency technologies capable of operating with hydrogen fuel blends.

Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chairman of Nebras Power, stated that the projects will meet the growing electricity demand in Oman, support socio-economic development, and create job opportunities for Omanis.

Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, expressed that their participation in these projects underscores their role as a regional development partner in critical infrastructure projects. He reiterated EtihadWE’s commitment to regional energy security, Gulf cooperation, and developing efficient power generation solutions.

EtihadWE’s involvement in these strategic consortiums strengthens its position as a leading utility in sustainable economic and community development and as an active regional partner in critical infrastructure projects. The company serves over two million people in the Northern Emirates, operates a vast power and water network, and is active in public-private partnership projects across the GCC and beyond.
