EWEC to host third Clean Energy Certificates auction in March

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), a leading company in the integrated coordination of planning, purchasing and supplying of water and electricity across the UAE, today announced it will host the third auction for Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) in Abu Dhabi, on 14th March 2022, following two successful auctions last year.

CECs enable Abu Dhabi entities to track and verify their clean energy usage from generation to consumption, helping to reduce their carbon footprint, and empowering them to achieve their sustainability goals.

Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said, “The CEC scheme is a new and innovative initiative that is already showing the significant impact it can have in helping companies decarbonise their energy consumption. Since the first CEC auction last September, the market has expanded rapidly to encompass the energy, industry, events, real estate and healthcare sectors, with landmark agreements signed with major entities to provide them with power from EWEC’s clean energy sources. As we begin 2022, we would urge any organisation looking to decarbonise to participate in the third auction. By participating now they can take a progressive step to take tangible action on climate change, and support the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.”

In 2021 October, EWEC signed a landmark strategic clean energy partnership with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) that will see up to 100 percent of ADNOC’s grid power supplied by EWEC’s clean energy sources. In January 2022, EWEC signed an agreement with Aldar Properties to power 100 percent of Aldar’s owned and managed operating assets by EWEC’s clean energy sources for up to five years.

CECs are tradeable digital certificates that verify the source a specific standard unit of energy (1MWh) was generated from. The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) issued a regulatory policy for the CECs scheme in August 2021 which, for the first time globally, included CECs for power generated from nuclear energy. EWEC is one of the key parties enabling the implementation of Abu Dhabi’s CECs scheme, acting as Single Registrant and auction operator to establish a primary market for this instrument, operating CECs auctions on a quarterly basis.

Registration to participate in the third CECs auction is now open.
