The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority (EA), has participated in the 5th session of the UN’s Environment Assembly, which was held in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to the Oman News Agency (ONA), the session aimed to promote actions for nature to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Sultanate of Oman was represented in the session by Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority.
Al Amri reaffirmed that the Sultanate’s interest in protecting nature and preserving its resources is rooted in the Omani culture and is one of the pillars of the Omani government’s approach, which seeks to achieve the SDGs.
This is manifested in the rules of environmental management that balance the requirements of economic and social development and the future ambition of Oman to keep pace with developments taking place on the global scene.
Al Amri added that the efforts made by the Environment Authority are represented in packages of programmes and projects, namely the national initiative to plant 10 million trees, which aims to develop Oman’s strategy for the environment.
The strategy will set the framework, principles, and methodologies of the green economy and the regulations of the eco-tourism sector.
Al Amri further said that based on Oman Vision 2040, in investing available opportunities and protecting natural resources, Ibri solar power plant was inaugurated as one of the largest renewable energy projects in the Sultanate of Oman, with a capacity of 500 megawatts.
