Saudi Arabia Participates in High-Level UN Security Council Debate on Cybersecurity

Riyadh: The National Cybersecurity Authority has participated in a high-level open debate on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Addressing Evolving Threats in Cyberspace”, held recently at the United Nations Security Council.

The Saudi delegation was headed by Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohamed Al-Wasel. It included National Cybersecurity Authority representatives.

The debate aimed to promote shared understanding of cybersecurity issues and strengthen the UN Security Council’s role in addressing cyber threats. It stressed that malicious activities in cyberspace have the potential to undermine international peace and security.

The Kingdom underscored the importance of creating a secure and reliable cyberspace that fosters growth and prosperity, stressing that improving cybersecurity is essential to safeguarding the
vital interests and national security of states.

Saudi Arabia expressed keenness to strengthen international cooperation in cybersecurity, and commended the Global Cybersecurity Forum, a global platform that brings decision makers together to discuss strategic cybersecurity issues. The previous edition of the forum brought together representatives of over 120 countries.

The Kingdom established the Global Cybersecurity Forum Foundation, based in Riyadh, to contribute to international efforts to enforce cybersecurity, cooperation, and the economic and social development of the field. This initiative aligns with and supports relevant international cybersecurity endeavors aiming to promote the prosperity and well-being of people worldwide while building human capabilities of countries and international organizations.

The Kingdom has organized cyber exercises in which more than 40 countries and organizations participated.

It reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in cybersecurity.

As
a result of its efforts, a specialized ministerial committee for cybersecurity was established under the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the Council of Arab Cybersecurity Ministers was formed under the League of Arab States, both based on proposals by the Kingdom.
